Mr. Smalls Theater

Hayes Carll is everything that’s right with country music today, but unfortunately his style is a dying breed amongst country singers looking for their next pop hit. His throwback style has been compared to the likes of Townes Van Zandt and hinges on the line of Outlaw Country.
Carll has seen a bit of success himself being nominated for a grammy for “Best Country Song” and winning song of the year in 2011 by American Songwriter and Artist of the Year by Americana Awards. His previous 4 albums are known for their foot stomping southern rock style. With his new album “Lovers and Leavers” he departs from that style to a more stripped down singer/songwriter feel.
The style change should come at no surprise though, with major changes in Carll’s life. Since his success in 2011 he went through a divorce and left his record label. Sometimes it is big transitions like these that bring out the best in a musician and that is clearly evident on the 5th studio album from a country music poet.
