Sometimes guitarists don’t get their full due respect, often a secondary component to lead vocalists. Jimmy Herring however has quietly built himself an illustrious career as a lead guitarist. Some may consider him the best at his craft in the jam scene mastering the art of improvisation. Herring often gets overlooked in the top guitarist’s of all time list, but who cares.
Herring has showed his talent with such bands as Col. Bruce Hampton, The Aquarium Rescue Unit, the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Widespread Panic, The Dead and now his latest project Jimmy Herring and the Invisible Whip. Herring will be joined by former Aquarium Rescue Unit bandmate Jeff Sipe on drums, Matt Slocum on bass and multi-instrumentalists Kevin Scott and Jason Crosby.
In a recent interview with the website Live for Live Music, talks about the new band stating, “Some of it is going to be stuff that I’ve done on a couple of previous records, and some of it will be new. New compositions that haven’t been recorded yet. And then some of it will be covers from the music that we all love. This thing is leaning towards — well, I don’t want to call it jazz. It’s definitely going to have elements of jazz, more so than the other bands that I typically will play in, just because there’s no vocals. And all of us as musicians love jazz, so there’s going to be some leanings towards that. It’ll still be rock though. It’s instrumental, so I guess that’s what its going to be. Instrumental, blues, rock, jazz, funk, American roots music with improvisation leaning toward the unknown.”
You can catch Jimmy Herring and the Invisible Whip this Friday with The Derek Woods Band for an all ages show at Mr. Smalls Theatre. Doors open at 7:30PM and the show begins at 8:30PM. Tickets are $22.50 in advance and can be purchased at TicketWeb, or win a pair from us.
