Too rock for punk, too punk for rock. The Detroit four-piece elusive of genre, Protomartyr, strikes again with their third (and possibly greatest) studio album yet, “The Agent Intellect” released in October. That’s due to the poignant, at times enchantingly dissonant vocals of Joe Casey, and the equally powerful backing of Greg Ahee on guitar, Scott Davidson on bass, and Alex Leonard on drums. It can be tempting to draw comparison to bands such as The Stooges simply for their shared stomping grounds, but that entirely leaves out a dynamic nature unique to Protomartyr.
This is Protomartyr’s first release after signing to Sub Pop Records, which comes only a year after their second album “Under Color of Official Right”. Opening are Pittsburgh natives Gotobeds, also recently signed to Sub Pop, and punk outfit Priests. Protomartyr will hit all over the U.S. and Europe to share their intense live performance, so don’t miss out, this Thursday at Brillobox.
Doors open at 9pm, starts at 9:30pm. 21+, $10.
