Lawrenceville was the place to be on Saturday, January 28th, when electro-duo Metacara and country group Molly Alphabet came together to play a show at Pints on Penn, to benefit CureRock, a Pittsburgh based non-profit organization that strives to raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer. The upstairs dining room at Pints on Penn was cleared of tables and promptly filled up with people who came out to show their support for the cause and take in some great local music. When Kyla and Vin (Metacara) were ready to perform, the lights were cut and the beat started. There was an ominous feel to the room, then Kyla’s delicate, yet powerful voice filled the dark room. The crowd gathered closer, to truly feel the syth beats and moody tunes. It was my first time hearing Metacara and I plan to catch them again soon! (pardon the photography…performing in the dark sets a great mood for their music, but doesn’t exactly make for an ideal photography vibe).
After a short break, Molly Alphabet took over the room with a full band performance. This couldn’t have been a bigger swing in genre and mood, but another incredible set was played and the crowd seemed to thoroughly love both bands, which speaks to the beauty of music and diversity! From dark, moody electro-synth beats to an upbeat, twang that makes you want to grab your cowboy boots, grab your partner and hit the dance floor. And, as any of you who read my reviews regularly, you know how I love a good cover. Molly Alphabet’s cover of John Prine’s “Please Don’t Bury Me” was no disappointment. And frankly, those are big shows to fill and they did it so well!
Molly Alphabet is no stranger to CureRock, having performed at the group’s 3rd annual “CureRock” main event concert in 2014. The support for CureRock from Molly Alphabet’s band goes deeper yet, with Teal Fitzpatrick (on keys) serving on the CureRock Board of Directors. And that back up vocalist and guitar player, Chet Vincent…you’ll find him and his band, The Big Bend, on the CureRock 2017 stage, closing out the main event at Hard Rock Cafe on March 30th! Over the years, CureRock has donated almost $40,000 to childhood cancer research, quality of life programs for childhood cancer patients and support to patients and their families while a child is receiving chemotherapy. CureRock 2017, sponsored by Hard Rock Cafe, Drusky Entertainment, Misra Records, Giant Eagle and Lending Hearts marks CureRock’s 6th year and it would be incredible to see Hard Rock Cafe sell out and make a record breaking year of fundraising for childhood cancer, through live music! Tickets are on sale now at the link below, so grab yours today! The CureRock 2017 lineup includes the return of Nashville based Matt Hires (who headlined CureRock 2015), Nashville singer/songwriter Kyle Cox and Pittsburgh’s own Chet Vincent & The Big Bend. With a bill like that, you can count on a night of brilliant music, for a great cause!
