MOD SUN is part of the Rostrum Records family, a label founded right here in Pittsburgh by Benjy Grinberg. Now located in Los Angeles, the label became nationally known with homegrown talent Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller and local indie favorites Donora. MOD SUN is Derek Smith, known earlier in his career as the drummer for hard core band Four Letter Lie and later Scary Kids Scaring Kids. Smith’s solo project is nothing like those two out outfits, subscribing to what is known as hippy hop.
Amongst a slew of EP’s, mix tapes and even written journals and poetry, MOD SUN has two studio albums to his credit with “Movie” being released earlier last month. This album, MOD SUN really steps it up a notch to show another side to his creativity. Some key tracks include “Beautiful Problem” and the reflective “The End or Start Again.”
MOD SUN’s last appearance in the burgh was November 2015 at the Altar Bar. Fittingly his next appearance will be on 4/20 at Mr. Smalls accompanied by Marty Grimes, Swaghollywood, New Hippy’s, DJ Kam Bennett, Benny Freestyles and Kurt Rockmore. Doors open at 7 pm and the show begins at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at ticketweb for $20-$22.
