Hugh Twyman, a staple in the Pittsburgh music scene, held his 4th installment of HughShows Live @ Eide’s along with the Wilderness Recording Studio. Hugh has been photographing the local scene and documenting it on his blog HughShows. For his 10th year on the scene, Hugh came up with the idea of putting together a monthly concert including some of Pittsburgh’s top musical talents. April featured Dan Getkin & the Masters of American Music, Arlo Aldo and The Lopez.

Eide’s Entertainment in Pittsburgh’s Strip District is the home of 3 floors filled with music, comics, videos and collectibles. Saturday, April 12th it was also the place to be for live music. While climbing to the 3rd floor of Eides’s, the serenading sounds of a David Manchester led Arlo Aldo was filling the air. Rows of cd’s and records lined the room, leading to an area in the back, where fans huddled around the four piece that also included Ariel Nieland on keys, bells, melodica and vocals, Susanna Meyers on bass and vocals and Brandon Forbes on percussion. Hugh’s famous band portraits and hand written song lyrics made up the back drop for the three bands that graced the stage.

Arlo Aldo played selections from their LP Zelie and a few more new tracks that will be included on an upcoming EP. The band’s special tribute to Hugh was Pimper’s Paradise by Bob Marley and the Wailers. “There’s a chance you’ll never hear that again, so this is a very special occasion for all of you,” says Manchester.

After a quick teardown, The Lopez consisting of husband and wife duo, Steph, or as fans know her, Stephenwolf, on vocals and synth and Jesse on vocals and guitar took the stage. The pair led a stripped down version of their normal performances that can be described as punk rock or as they refer to as snot rock. The band still rocked out with their lower key sound playing tunes like “Furriest One,” from their latest 7″ called Fur 7-inch and “Lonely Feeling” and “White Lady,” from More Muppet than Human. The Lopez even shocked Hugh when they played “Cuyahoga,” by R.E.M for their surprise song to him.

You can catch the the 5th installment of this one of a kind event Saturday, May 10th featuring Host Skull, Brooke Annibale and The Wheals. The event is family friendly, so bring the kids and new school supply items to help the Homeless Children’s Education Fund. Items to consider are pens, pencils, pocket folders, note books, glue sticks, rulers etc. See you there.
