Corey Woods, aka Raekwon, aka The Chef, aka legendary hip hop artist is making a stop in Pittsburgh on Thursday. His last appearance was at Diesel on the South Side with partner Ghostface Killah in 2016 and in 2015 at Thrival Festival. The former Wu Tang Clan members performed with 5 members of their old band at Mr. Smalls Theatre in 2010 for the “Rebirth Tour” on New Year’s Eve.
Rae got his start with Wu-Tang Clan in 1992 as a 9 member hip hop group based in Staten Island New York. With hit albums like Enter the Wu-Tang : 36 Chambers and later Wu-Tang Forever, 5 members of the Clan saw solo success. Raekwon was one of them releasing his debut in 1995 called Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… and a sequel to the album in 2009.
Hip Hop website HipHopDX named Raekwon emcee of the year in 2009 stating the following:
“Raekwon brought it back to lyrical, dope rap. He released an album that spoke to teens, twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, and beyond. Without compromising, the Chef made an edgy Hip Hop record that refused to bastardize the catalog he laid down 15 years ago. On top of that, Rae (along with Ghostface) was a go-to for numerous rappers making albums, ranging from the Playaz Circle to Jadakiss to BK One. That’s beyond real, as was a year filled with performing in arenas, clubs and even churches. When it came to mastering the ceremony, Rae had ’em all following the leader.”
You can catch The Chef Thursday, July 20 at Mr Smalls Theatre with Stann Smith, and locals Hubbs, Moemaw Naedon, Franchise (The Come-Up), SpaceJam Jiff, and DJ Big Phill. Doors open at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm. for the all ages show. Tickets are $25 in advance at TicketWeb or $30 day of show, or win a pair from us!
